South Cambs Online is an independent news and information site for South Cambridgeshire, the district that surrounds Cambridge without including it. We report what the public record shows and keep the everyday information people look up in one place.
A district with no town at its centre
Most local sites can name their town in the first line. This one cannot, because the largest settlements here are Cambourne, Histon and Impington and Sawston, and none of them is big enough to speak for the rest. So we cover the villages as villages: Great and Little Shelford, Stapleford, Waterbeach, Milton, Girton, Bar Hill, Longstanton, Swavesey, Willingham, Cottenham, Comberton, Melbourn, Bassingbourn, Harston, Fulbourn, Balsham, Linton, Duxford, Whittlesford, the Abingtons, Papworth and Gamlingay among them, along with the new settlements going up at Cambourne, Northstowe and Waterbeach.
What we report
South Cambridgeshire District Council handles planning, bins, licensing and housing, and county-level services come from Cambridgeshire County Council, so we say plainly which body a decision came from. Our sources are the district’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the Cam, the Rhee and the Granta, and company filings in The Gazette. Every fact links back to the original.
What happens to the council
The future of local government here has not been settled. A consultation on four options for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough closed in March 2026, and most of the options submitted would put South Cambridgeshire together with Cambridge city in a single authority. No decision has been announced. When one is, we will report what the published documents say rather than what anyone predicts.
Tips and corrections
In a district of villages, residents nearly always know first. Email hello@southcambsonline.co.uk with anything we should be looking at, an event worth listing, or a correction. Tips are treated in confidence, and corrections are made quickly and noted on the page.
South Cambs Online is published by the GOB Media Group. We are independent of the council and of everyone else we cover.
